:mjlol: dont know if this was a reference to me, but honest you dont know enough to even insinuate.

and does not the 8 -fold not coincides with this thread? (:smh: :comeon:)

Grow Up Breh

fact remains you had time to speak on the shyt and you didnt, if you are what you say you are put up or shut up and this thread. And lets not make excuses bruh, lets not act like threads that couldve been made in HL on atheism, islam, MLK & Malcolm as of recent werent made in TLR as of recent, you werent interested in the thread to begin with, and it shows with your weak rebuttals.

:snoop: again with the pompous statements you do realize this further proves that you dont knowa damn thing about buddhism. I've studied the shyt in 2003 along with taoism and confucianism and the lesser known Mohist Philosophy. If you really insinutae and claim to be something, dont backslide, when somebody call you out. If you claim that a selfless act relates to buddhism, back it up.....dont backslide. as far as the teacher statement, everything you say is do is a lesson for somebody IRL or online so that statement in itself is a flawed one.

Thoughts on The Question I pose in the thread title

Something to Ponder Hypothethically:

Denise hears through word of mouth that Tiffany is having difficulty making ends meet and providing for his family of 4. Denise knows Tiffany would not accept outright money, so late at night Denise slips some money into an envelope and puts it in Tiffany's mailbox. Nobody besides the giver will ever know who the anonymous giver of the gift was.

What motivated Denise to make this apparent act of selflessness? Was it really and truly selfless in the first place?
It wasn't a completely selfless act....Denise will know what she did. She'll hold her head up high, and gain a psychological boost if she finds out that Tiffany was grateful to her anonymous donar.

There are other philosophical and psychological perspectives of course....but I personally tend to agree with the egoist. We all ultimately do what makes us feel "right" in some fashion.

Denise is going to feel good about herself.

Look at it this way : She wouldn't give the money to a serial killer, or a child rapist....why? Because she wouldn't have felt good for doing it afterwords. THAT would actually be "selflessness". The kind of person who WOULD feel good about doing that...well, that's the point, they felt good about it, so it wasn't a "selfless" act.

Of course, we often have to do things that we don't like, and sometimes that includes helping other people. But those are obligations, not selfless acts.

There are hypotheticals that can somewhat break this line of reasoning. But they are so abstract that it really becomes a semantic exercise at that point.
