When the away team is leading at the top of the 9th there is no immediate fear of them losing the lead because they have it. This doesn't happen in basketball. It does happen at the top of the 9th when a home team is leading and at the bottom of the bottom of the 9th when the road team is leading.
When the team is in the lead, yes it means it can't be instantly lost. This doesn't happen in basketball.Plus the fact that one team controls the action doesn't mean that a lead can't be lost instantly because of the presence of a home run so there is an immediate fear.
Actually I'd argue the lack of control is in basketball's favor because that changing of margins is in continuous run - less time to strategize and therefore more opportunities for the team that's in a deficit to take the lead, because it can happen at any given time. The amount of emotional highs and lows that come with watching a close basketball game in the final minutes when the lead keeps changing is more stressful than a team batting that's in the lead over an equivalent period (top of the 9th).Plus the lack of control works in baseball's favor in this argument because the winning team can't run out the clock and HAS to execute three outs.
