Does anybody remember the original version of the video for Wake Up by Brand Nubian?

They wouldn't play the original version on MTV, only BET, so they made this edited alternate one.



The OG version had a devilish-looking black man in whiteface...he was covered in baby powder or white paint or some shyt. And he had horns on his head and sharp teeth. He was offering up a pig on a platter that had words all over like Christianity, liquor, crack, etc. That's why MTV wouldn't show it.

I mentioned this to a couple of people I know the other day and they didn't remember it and were looking at me like I was talking about the "one less bytch in a Roc-a-fella coat" song.

It seems to be scrubbed from history. I can't find it on youtube or anything. Please tell me someone else remembers it.

..yeah i loved that video they shot it at the school of meccca in harlem...it had the older god Kalim at the intro..

Thanks because the cats I was talking to the other day almost had me thinking I was crazy and imagined it.

It's funny to look back and think that that video got national television play. MTV banned it, but BET didn't. Imagine a video with a black man in whiteface playing a devil cutting a roasted pig with Christianity written on it getting airplay today.

nah u aint crazy.......and they did X-CLAN and POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS the samr way .


Mtv at the time had a qualitu control board...which was definitly bias towards afrocentric music...but had no problem
playing ME SO HORNY by two live crew...

but what do u expect this is the same network that fronted on Michael Jackson when he dropped Billie Jean till the CBS/SONY brass had a mafia like sitdown with MTV
