Majin Buu is probably my favorite big bad behind Freiza in Z

The story didn't have any of the emotion of the previous arcs aside from Vegeta blowing himself up(it was undone like 2 chapters later lol) but it's good fun, I had fun watching it, that's all that really matters I suppose

It’s main problem is that is was too disconnected from the Cell Saga.

The Saiyan, Namek/Frieza and Android/Cell sagas all flowed and work as a trilogy.

It felt weird watching Gohan suddenly not being a fighter and then Goku and Vegeta fighting again.

Probably because DBZ at its core was always about Gohan as the coming of age protagonist, which is why Saiyan through Cell saga felt like a natural progression… from what Gohan was as a useless crying baby to the savior/protector of the planet. The story was complete.

With the Buu saga and onward, it felt like concession that nobody cares about Gohan, and that corporate dollars begin and end with Goku. Hence the “greatest hits” feeling of Goku v (Majin) Vegita, exclusive Goku ssj transformation, a cell adjacent villain, final battle off planet like vs frieza, and then with GT let’s make Goku a kid again to get that peak demographic back.

I can’t help it. The hype during the time was at a fever pitch. The build up, the AMVs of the saga with linkin park/creed, the games dropping around the time, the wait for it.

All your critiques are valid, but when Vegita blew up them people and started dropping bars :ohlawd: :blessed: :damn: still a top 5 speech.

13/14 year old me wanted the spectacle and buu saga delivered. I am not ashamed to admit that. :manny:
I know what you mean. What a time to be alive :(.

I tried to start from the beginning of Kai for a rewatch. I’m not sure I can do it brehs. I made it like 4 episodes in before I had to stop.

It had some good fights and moments, but it's definitely the weakest saga in Z.

The main problem is that Buu was just never a good villain compared to the likes of Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, or even the Androids. He doesn't really have any backstory or motivation, he's basically a monster-of-the-week that just wouldn't go away. Plus he spent a lot of time rehashing things that other villains already did (absorbing other fighters, stealing their moves, turning on their creator, etc.).

You a cornball if you didn't like it at the time and if you're coming back years later to say it wasn't actually good that's corny too

Exactly, a greatest hits with new washed vocals and mixing

Exactly. And he was just stupidly OP. I mean he had a genocide attack where he didn't even try and killed everyone on the planet without trying. He no sold Vegeta's best attack which now later beat a DESTROYER GOD. He make Gohan irrelevant like immediately, after weeks and weeks of story building level ups. Dude was too powerful to be entertaining.
