AIDS is once your white cell count drops below a certain level and you start to get opportunistic infections. Some patients develop to this level very slowly, or not at all. There is no real genetic indicator for why this happens with some people.
Also, HIV/AIDS is no longer an absolute death sentence, even in poorer countries. There are courses of treatment that: prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child; can be used in medical settings for accidental exposure to infected blood; allow HIV positive folks to live a relatively healthy life for a long time. In more and more cases, the challenge has been dealing with the interaction of antiretroviral drugs and other meds used for more common ailments. Like diabetes. Or high blood pressure. It's just amazing that the treatment has come as far as it has.
While Magic probably does have access to newer treatments, money isn't an issue when it comes to medication that will allow HIV+ folks to remain healthy. If you're positive in America -- and many other countries -- free or cheap testing, medication, and counseling is available.
