We are Black culturally, Brown physically/literally.
I don't have a problem with this. I have always thought Hispanics calling themselves what we literally ARE was silly. When I was a kid, I called myself brown too, because I was fighting against that notion specifically.
At that time in my life, I had noticed everything negative was referred to as Black: Black Magic, Black Sheep, Black Mark, Black Death, Black Guard, Blackmail, Black (Dark) humor, etc.
So naturally, I saw them calling US "Black" even though we was brown as a fukking negative
It wasn't until I reached my 20s that I became comfortable with referring to myself in that same way, when I realized our sense of community was defined through our "Blackness". Now these days in my 30s, I don't give a fukk-- I'm Black and I'm proud. Anybody got a problem with that, come see me.
