I don't what it is, but somehow I seem to remember things quickly and I almost never forget anything. I never forget face, I never forget discussions I have with anyone even if I barely know someone , and because I work in highly regulated industry, I have 100s codification memorized. I don't intentionally memorize codes. I read them usually once, and remember their order, location, their meaning and reference. Sometimes its like a feeling.
Recently, my boss questioned a sampling method that and internal audit group. I "felt" like the GAAS guidance on sampling was PCAOB au section 350, and guidance addressing her issue was a footnote at the end of the section. Low and behold I was right. I doesn't make me smarter than anyone, and I think a lot of people feel threatened by it and get pissed when I tell them exact paragraph they need to answer their question.
I can't remember number strings that well, but on the spacial memory tests i am usually in the 99 percentile.
It is more like a parlor trick then anything else.
But it becomes a problem when I remember things that nobody else would remember. I spoke with someone quite randomly at dinner party 5 years ago. I saw her agian recently, and she goes "hey, do you remember?" I proceeded to say yeah and listed everything that she told me 5 years ago. She looked very shocked and scared. I assumed she thought i was a creep or something. She didn't realize that I remembered everything that everyone told me that night, and every other night. I remember things that aren't even important.
I remember good, bad, imortant or trivial. However, I wish could forget bad things. I was at Disneyland recently, and I heard the teacup music. I hadnt been to Disneyland since I was 5. The music brought back a vivid memory from my 5th year of life, which was a very painful event. I was sad the rest of the day.
Onetime I said hi to someone i met at a mutual friends house, when I saw him working at hometown buffet. This 15 years ago. He didnt remember me at all, and this has happened to me more than enough times that I now hesitate to say hi to someone I remember.
It helps in being salesmen though because people feel important because i can remember little details.
Overall, It doesnt really help me in life. It helped in college classes because most classes are just memory based, and I didn't need to study as much as other people. But in essay based, logic based or open book math exams, I definitely struggled to stay in the in 90 percentile of the class, and ended up with B grades sometimes. I would trade memory for 10 more IQ points.
