People will latch on to anything that makes them feel like a part of a perceived elite and sexual labeling is the newest ego stroke. Same goes for healthy eating and travelling in many cases. It would be interesting for academia to dissect this like you said though I'm guessing herd mentality and a need for validation shapes it all.

Most people are attracted to intelligence anyway. It's complete bullshyt to say that physical and personality traits go out of the window as long as you can match or exceed a "sapiosexual" in intelligence.
