Aaliyah had that Janet Jackson swag. Not a great vocalist but an all around great performer. Beyonce is a different breed of entertainer. But one thing Aaliyah had was Missy and Timbaland.

as for the singing thing, its not that beyonce cant sing. its just that theres been tons of people that blow her out the water vocally. and its not so much a knock on beyonce, altho it often turns into a knock on her, as a result of casual r&b listeners over-hyping her vocals. some people are doing it in this thread already.

her voice is clear & potent like a champ tho. especially with all that dancing. its amazing. but shes far from a drop-dead vocalist. her lane is being the greatest entertainer in the world today.......but the lines are so blurred now that casual fans take it for more than it is, which results in more serious fans brushing sometimes brushing beyonce off altogether.

its like, can you imagine janet Jackson being held in higher regard than whitney Houston? not saying that beyonce is weak-voiced like janet, but I'm saying. theres like no perspective now from the general public. you got people classifying rihanna as an r&b artist now.

Janet made better music than Whitney. I only love one Whitney song. U give good love.

Everyone acklowdeges that she's a great performer and there's no debate to that. But reading that she's not that great of a singer, and things like she can't sing better than Aaliyah, Monica, Mary, brandy etc has me a bit stumped.

Whose songs you like better will always be an opinion but how the hell are people overlooking her superior vocal talent?

basically you agree that she was about done, and at best, she would've got some producers/writers to carry her to a few more hits - which was basically the story of her whole career.





whats funny is that the post-death sales for that album aren't impressive either.

they tried to force that album for an entire year with some of the goat dead-rapper promotion and it stayed stuck at 1x platinum. now its just sitting at double after 15 years of hype. LOL.

No it doesn't contradict the rest of my post. For starters, Aaliyah had two to five year breaks between albums with soundtrack singles in between. Theoretically speaking, if she came back in 2003 with another album, it's 500K-700K, maybe platinum at best. That's not a knock against Aaliyah, but just basing this on what her contemporaries were doing in that period. None of them were repeating the successes that they had in the 90's. It's still unpredictable though, because nobody could've predicted in '98 that Monica would be outselling Brandy in the next 5-6 years.

It's crazy that you think R&B singers could just release acapella albums with them simply humming and it would sell. All of them (regardless of how great) need lyrics, which requires writers and music, which requires producers and/or musicians.

All of them were carried by writers/producers including Beyoncé, Brandy, and Monica. Even all time greats like Whitney Houston worked with the greatest of producers and writers.

And again you're wrong. Aaliyah sold 2.6 million copies and I Care 4 U (which was basically a greatest hits compilation) sold.

Ya'll kill me with that "her voice lacks soul" noise. If you're a fair and balanced music critic I can respect and dig it, but a lot of people I hear say that sound just like the folks in the late '80's who had the same critique of Whitney so it just sounds like history repeating itself. See how silly that sounds 30 years later? Ironically enough, and I won't name no names, but a lot of our favorite artists that have so much "soul" in their voices can't actually, technically sing, they just sound good, which ain't a knock on them, just an observation that often goes unchecked. They get exposed when they try to sing a standard like The National Anthem or a ballad with no runs. I'll take a rich, consistent tone and harmony over redundant vocal inflections and runs any day of the week

The Beyonce experience tour was when I first looked at her like this Chick is next level. Before that I felt he was overrated. But she did a performance of crazy in love and freakum dress that she caught the holy ghost. shyt had energy, coordination, showmanship and sexiness.
