Said this in another thread yesterday but it's more appropriate for this thread:
As a long time NYer, I don't understand how anyone can ever, ever, feel confident about the Nets regarding making a title run. The Nets are one of those "one achievement at a time" franchises, who it seems never grow from one step to the next, save for a brief moment in their NBA history . Even that run spanning from 2001-2003 resulted in zero banners of REAL significance, and the curtain came down on that act almost as fast as it rose. They are one of those franchises that will win a playoff series, have everyone buzzing about them during the offseason where they are pegged as an "up & coming franchise," only to produce the exact same results for the next several years, or take a step back and disappear into oblivion for several years until they make it back to playoffs, win a series or lose one valiantly, only to repeat their cycle of mediocrity, which then becomes a perpetual cycle.
And no, Net fans, I'm not dissing your franchise, but as a student of history and precedent, it's alarming to see this cycle ebb and flow continually with these teams across all sports, which unfortunately your squad is a part, and in fact all 3 of the "NY -ets" are part of this paradigm. I'm a Jet & Rangers fan so believe me when I tell you I can empathize.
For another example, remember when the 1998 Arizona Cardinals beat the Cowboys in the playoffs and were a media darling pick for like the next 4 years? They wouldn't see expanded success for another 10 years with a SB berth, only to quickly fall back to their own norm. Some teams' luck just operate that way
