think about it, everyone likes mob movies.

Everybody's favorite charactor in Menance is O-Dog. No one likes that intellectual muslim guy. Tupac was supposed to play (which fits his TRUE personality better) but he wanted to play a thug role.

is there such a thing as a 'real' thug, or does everyone put on an act to some extent?

The only constant in the factor would be society's pressure. People won't take you seriously or value your opinion unless you "look" or "act" a certain way. Stereotyped out.

only immature dudes want to be thugs because they dont know any better. dudes that happen to be thugs out of circumstance who are actually smart dont want to be thugs anymore and do their best to get out of that environment. i know dudes that used to be thugs that moved as far away from their old friends as possible and started new lives elsewhere with regular jobs and a family.

It depends on what you mean by thug. One person might here thug and think criminal, hoodlums. Another person with a perspective other than yours might think boss, gangster, one who doesn't answer to anyone.....truth be told we see "thugs" everyday on tv. Some thugs wear guns and badges that says police on it. Some thugs wear suits and ties and tell us lies and kill thousands of people by just their word
