Does Jay reference Basquiat on every song on MGHC?

This dude said "chillin' naked". LMAO!!

The whole Basquiat thing is some bullshyt to me. It's that artsy fartsy shyt that people cling to, because the dude was a cultural menace in his time. His work really looks like a kid got blindfolded and just went crazy with a couple crayons. But because he died and left behind this cryptic legacy, his work got valued wild high and became the "cool" thing to associate yourself with or own.

So naturally, this ended up becoming some kinda twisted status symbol and one that people all over have embraced. I don't get it, never will. I just can't get with the hype on that one. The work doesn't do anything for me.

Nah hes pretty dope but when Jay hypes him up in the same way that he hypes up high end fashion brands its fake as fukk.

Hes trying to turn Basquiat into a high art status symbol

Just something for Jay to make himself look more artsy when it comes across as vague, dude probably just heard about Basquiat a few years ago and is now his supposed "biggest" fan. R.I.P. to Basquiat but I always felt people were more into his image than his art.

The message his work had was dope. Aesthetically, I can't fukk with it.

I'm not mad at Jay though. He actually owns the cat's work. He's really into art, so he's being true to himself. I just don't agree with the fascination there. There's mad other shyt that could be referenced. Jay's my dude, but it's overkill with the Basquiat. I don't know who annoys me more with the shyt, him or Swizz with all the damn Basquiat logos on his clothes and kicks. LOL!!

Dude wasn't kicking no shyt about art, til he started hanging round all his white friends.

Dude finally grew up at 37, and makes references to Banksy and Basquiat... when dude probably just accidentally watched Exit thru the gift shop on netflix one night.

Dude became cultured in his 40's, cause he showing growth...he's so evolved.

:russ: @ the bolded, or he probably just stumbled on the radiant child documentary, It's clearly vague, his love for Basquiat, Banksy, Keith Haring, Warhol and other high end artists. Jay just trying to make himself look more like a complex individual when most of the topics in his music lately doesn't match with it.

haha idk much about Basquiat but I watched like 20 min of a documentary on him and he was just an overall strange cat.

Like some other dude mentioned he would scribble all over everything

But also I remember this one interview where this dude (who didnt even know him very well) remembers Basquiet letting him in to his apartment with no clothes on

I just cant see Jay Z standing for stuff like that. :pachaha:

If Basqiuat was still alive and Jay came to his apartment (to ask him cliche questions about his art), and Basquiat was just chilling naked, what would Jays reaction be?? :umad:

Maybe it was on some deep artsy shyt :manny:

I remember when Keith Harring and Basquiat were talked about when they were still alive, i thought the 80s raised Jay-z? I actually dont think he started to talk about him until Kanye did.

*plays Picasso baby 2x anyways*

Like I said in another thread, Jay's got a great life and all, he reached the top of the mountain, but culturally + musically I kind of feel for dude... culturally because he can't go back to the place that made and defines him (partially because he's too rich, but partially because it's gone, partially thanks to him)... musically because it seems like he's run out of things to talk about. His content hasn't matured much; he has just found more extravagant things to brag about owning.

U look at an actual celebrity art collector... Steve Martin for example... he's not running around bragging about his collection. And his shyt is worth at least 8 figures. Jay doesn't seem to get it. He is still in that "nikka you aint up on thissssss" hood mentality which now seems insecure and at odds with his financial stature. It's fukking bizarre.

Basquiat's best friend and screen-writer of his bio-pic (Michael Holman) was on Combat Jack recently and basically said Jay needs to keep dudes name out of his mouth... He said it bothers him how Jay and Swizz use his friends name and work as their newest version of "bling" or "stuntin" and thats the exact opposite of what he wanted his work to be...He said the only rapper he respects the name dropping from is Kanye because he did it before it was trendy and is a real artist and collector and not just a hype beast...

He doesn't want to see that "I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can" mentality rub off on his friends legacy and he's afraid thats what might happen...
