Does Premium gas make a difference in your car?

I always get regular gas. :hubie:

But I'll be gettng a new car later this year. Does premium gas (plus, super) make a difference in the overall health of your car,,or does it just last longer? I'm in the northeast, so I'm only using A/C 3.5 months tops

Look up the manual of your car. If the manual specifically says your car can take Regular (or Octane 87) gas, than buying Plus or Premium would just be waste of money.

In theory, a higher octane fuel means the ignition system will advance the ignition timing, which should lead to a performance gain. Also the higher the octane the kess likely your engine is to experience knock.

But to make any meaningful power gain your car needs to be built to run on higher octane fuel. You won't get shyt out of it if the recommended octane from factory is low.

As an example I know a guy who has an old school WRX STI converted to run on E85, though it can take low octane petrol as well. On E85 it makes 360 horses at the wheels, on low octane fuel it loses at least 50 of those

Simply put, if your car's manual calls for regular then using anything higher would pretty much be a waste of money. On the other hand using a lesser grade and your car calls for more might present problem as you put on the miles.

This is pretty much it...

Also you can change your timings using an ECU tuner to take higher or lower octane. The PCM will do this on its own but only after it detects enough engine knock

I got a couple cars that got a pulley coming out of the intake manifold, its mandatory for me..:jawalrus:

From my car's manual

Use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. You may also use regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced, and you may notice a slight audible knocking noise, commonly referred to as spark knock. If the octane is less than 87, you may notice a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might damage your engine. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear heavy knocking, your engine needs service.

So I actually tested this yesterday...

I have a 2018 Ford F-150 2.7 twinturbo ecoboost truck

for about amonth i have been using 87 octane and was getting 17-18 MPG in town

Yesterday, I put 93 octane and have been getting around 22-23 MPG in town... so yeah, it makes a difference.
