it really does distort perception. i used to think about, even though we're in north america, we're still quite a ways away from the north pole, with the gargantuan size of canada. until i found out the true size of canada. then it made sense why chicago kept getting "arctic vortexes" or in a few instances reached temperatures on par with antartica.

it's also interesting how there is not equal distortion around both poles. just the northern.
it also puts the havoc being caused by us-russia-china into perspective.

I agree they should, I also agree with the post above that they should get their shyt together.

Too divided and too corrupt against there own.. but tribalism and all
europeans are also super corrupt and tribal, but they have a "code" that keeps them from collapsing

Africans don't have to love each other, which i would love to see, but they do need to have a sense of functional community.

Europeans aren’t the people we should be modeling ourselves after.

It’s the reason for a lot of issues in the world today. It’s the reason they try to claim, vulture, and steal damn near everything others create

But I do agree

The Mercator Projection does distort the lands of the southern hemisphere, its just that maps dont show the whole map. The map below is a direct result of the logic behind Mercator's projection itself. That's why the lands near the north pole are so much larger than they really are:

Maps don’t show Greenland’s true size. Here’s how big it actually is.

1/15/26
President Donald Trump is hoping to take control of Greenland, a Danish territory covering more than 836,000 square miles —three times the size of Texas, with about 80% covered by a massive ice cap.

Flawed maps have often made the island appear smaller or larger than it is. On some maps, it looks similar in size to Africa.

So, how big is Greenland? Here’s everything to know.

Scale

One of the biggest places in the world, Greenland is approximately 20 times the size of Denmark and 14 times smaller than Africa, according to VisitGreenland.com.

Comparison: The world's largest island that's not a continent, Greenland is larger than France, Germany, Spain, and the UK combined. It's also larger than the state of Alaska but smaller than the contiguous United States.

Who lives in Greenland?

The island has a population of roughly 56,480 and is among the least densely populated in the world. Roughly 88% of the people who live on the island are Inuit or mixed Danish and Inuit. The remaining 12% of inhabitants are of European descent, primarily Danish.

People who live on the island speak both Greenlandic and Danish.

About one-quarter of the population lives in the capital city of Nuuk, which is the biggest settlement on the island and has museums, cafes and fashion boutiques, according to the tourism website.
