They rather hire a TI sounding dude saying words like “serendipitous” than a Charleston White nikka with a 4th grade education

The real question is, how do you build your grammar for the corporate world!

Also, it's hard to switch code between the corporate and real world. Sometimes my heavy Brooklyn accent comes out along with my articulation.
Read books, and watch videos.

People hate Andrew state, but look at the way he speaks and formulates sentences. Over time you will naturally pick it up.

The same way kids pick up bad grammar and curse words because they hear it from adults and mimic it.

Yes; more than actual qualifications, a lot of times.

I used to get mad at the comments like “you’re so smart” or “I’ve never met anyone like you” because I took them as saying “I didn’t think black men were articulate and carried themselves well”. But I don’t even get upset anymore because too many of us don’t know how to present ourselves in a professional manner, so I kinda get it…

Edit: Let me just tell you; having an Asian woman blurt out “you’re the smartest person in this room”, in a meeting full of nothing but “other” people, is embarrassing, flattering, weird, enlightening, and a bunch of other shyt all rolled into one emotion

I've got a friend I went through business school with. Dude is smart, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten into school, but he's got an extremely strong Atlanta accent and can't code switch well. I think it held him back in the interview process. Consulting is big on presentation and communication. Can't think of any other reason why the firms we interviewed with didn't bite as he's more than qualified.

The easiest way around it is not over talking, getting straight to the point with your words, keep it simply, and ask a lot of questions to the person interviewing you. A lot of follow up questions. It’s really all about making them feel comfortable hiring you.

I used to watch movies and pay attention to how the actors spoke. Then I picked up on certain words or phrases and just added to my vocabulary.

I’ve seen people get hired for jobs they had no business getting, but how they talk and carry themselves enables them to fake it till they get caught up.

It’s a basic but underrated fundamental trait to have and is often overlooked and underrated.

yes.

the old "hugh grant" goes a long way
