Where I grew up (Lowcountry SC), that wasn't true AT ALL. But there is a HUGE connection of lowcountry people and NYC so maybe just different in my area of the south. Lots of NYC cats had Carolina roots/people, so it wasn't really a thing like that. But the generations after mine definitely focused less on NYC rap as I get older.I can’t say now but growing up this was true. There were exceptions, specifically Biggie.
