Does the South's reign in rap have more to do with the culture of the USA than the culture of NY?

This is a good point that I have always thought about. The car culture influences how a lot of us listen to music. The 808s and bass heavy records appeal to more people in the South/Mid-West and West Coast.

The Boom-Bap signature sound of NY was made for headphone listening while walking or riding the subway. That's why Southern/West Coast Music had more of a groove. Think Chronic and Southernplayalistic, and Illmatic or Enter The 13th Chamber for contrast.

Here is another thought, most American music originated in the South. (Because thats where most black people lived) Hip-Hop might be the rare American music form that started in the Northeast. Maybe the music was destined to go back South.
