Does the Westcoast promote conscious or alternative artist better than the east in 2024?

I think it’s ironic, because Outside of pharcyde and other alt Westcoast collectives, the west was constantly criticized for being one-note and pro-gangster/playerism. But Nowdays, it seems like the west provides more balance with their acts while NY and the east is dedicated to drill. That’s just my observation. I could be wrong. :jbhmm:

TDE is kinda spearheaded. Then you got Tyler, and the Wolfgang collective and everyone who sprang from them.

The West been able to renew itself, the diversity in talent is insane. On top of that they're running the charts too now (Kendrick and Tyler).
That’s what it feels like. Even someone like 50 cent coming out and saying “they’re taking down Drake and promoting Kendrick to take out gritty hip hop” is funny. In 1989-1995 when we’ve had NWA through death row, nobody in a million years would’ve thought an NY artist would criticize a Compton artist for being “too conscious” and getting a Pulitzer. :mjlol:

NWA informed cats about how the police was doing cats… that’s more conscious than someone “I’m black now, I’m blackity black, I’m black yall”.

2 Live Crew and NWA helped fought for freedom of expression in Hip Hop.

Real talk.

Oddly enough, Dre sampled KRS for the Chronic…

KRS had a lot of conscious songs mixed with street stuff with a dash of the 5 Elements of Hip Hop.

KRS had the perfect, PERFECT balance of conscious and street until he became too preachy….but even then it’s understandable.

I mean look at the Black youth today :yeshrug:

Born from those kids he was trying to educate on these songs :francis:

I’m speaking moreso Nowdays. The westcoast feels more eclectic with who they’re pushing to represent them. Compared to NYC and the east which seems to be all about drill. Although Lil Uzi is pretty eclectic.

Respect the good & understand the bad
The west has always been the most socially conscious region when it comes to music imo. E40 still includes at least one or two conscious tracks on his albums. Too Short back in the day as well. We have tons of smaller indie political acts such as The Coup and Paris. Even our more gangster rap oriented artists tend to lean toward it whether they're older like the Delinquents or newer like nef the pharoah or LaRussell. Hell, you could even throw Mozzy up there when it comes to this.

Mistah FAB dropped a whole concious album that was surprisingly good kinda recently too (side note: Listen to the second track Power. It came out two years before people were trying to say Gunna came up with "Pushin P")

West Coast always had a nice balance. Nigggas forgetting Cube?

In general back in the day rap and hip hop was balanced across all regions. South, Eastcoast, Midwest. Everywhere really.

Outkast, Brand Nubian, De la Soul, Common etc. etc.

Its only recently that things went to shyt. The trap to Drill to Prostitute/Stripper rap era.

Mos Def spoke about this. Back in the day it was balanced everywhere. You could listen to Kool G rap and then to Tribe on the radio. shyt the Native Tongues and Solaquarians collectives at the time. But now it's just trash rap.

So we are just going to ignore Ice Cube’s first four albums. His album had America spelled with three kkks
