Does the Westcoast promote conscious or alternative artist better than the east in 2024?

So we are just going to ignore Ice Cube’s first four albums. His album had America spelled with three kkks
The Eastcoast already had equivalent artist like Public Enemy, Tribe, De La Sol. My point is that, in the 2020s the east isn’t really promoting equivalent artist as the west in terms of being eclectic alternative or conscious artist. NY only seems to be promoting the drill. My point was not that the west NEVER had conscious rappers. The west always had a balance between militant pro black rappers, artsy rappers, and straight up gangster degenerate rappers. Westcoast Kam, Cube, Pharcyde, Ahmad, Blu, NWA, etc.

Oddly enough, Dre sampled KRS for the Chronic…

KRS had a lot of conscious songs mixed with street stuff with a dash of the 5 Elements of Hip Hop.

as much as i love Kris Parker, i could never accept the fact that a grown ass man interpolated "row, row, row your boat" as a hook

BDP has quite a few clunkers in their catalog, even on their classics. it is what it is though, i still love all those records anyway lol :salute:

West Coast from my observation has been more open minded to alternative acts and genres which has allowed their more mainstream acts to take creative risks that artists in other regions won't.
As an native growing up in the 80s and 90s the hippie culture was just a part of us rather we knew it or not too.

Tyler and Kendrick came out 15 years ago.

That’s like me saying NY pushes alternative rap because of A$AP Mob, Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies and that whole movement. In fact I could point to the diversity of NY hip hop in the last decade with alternative acts, Renaissance boom bap acts, melodic rappers, women rappers, drill rappers but it would be discredited because NY hip hop is constantly boxed in chasing a ghost.

Most new West Coast rap is street shyt and very local even more so than present day NY hip hop.

That’s what it feels like. Even someone like 50 cent coming out and saying “they’re taking down Drake and promoting Kendrick to take out gritty hip hop” is funny. In 1989-1995 when we’ve had NWA through death row, nobody in a million years would’ve thought an NY artist would criticize a Compton artist for being “too conscious” and getting a Pulitzer. :mjlol:
If that overly conscious artist ain't from NY, I can absolutely see it. Lol

Coast do not promote anything, what you mean to ask is do people on the west coast receive conscientious artists in the promotion of them better than their East Coast counterparts

Tyler The Creator, Doechii(Florida but she signed to TDE) Ab Soul. There’s been a string of albums from out there this year that show the diversity of the west.
Yeah I didn't see the alternative bit of the title. I think CA has way more mainstream stars than NY, but it's also a much bigger state. I don't really know what to make of it.

It's like the east just sat out the era of hip hop that produced longstanding acts like drake jcole Tyler Kendrick etc. I thought it was going to be asap but he's doing whatever.

Nah the west did that better back in the day. The whole Heiro crew and others from Oakland/The Bay were as important to me as gangsta rap. I mean E-40 and Too Short would hit you with game too. I think you’ll be forcing it trying to say they got all these known conscious rappers when you can name a bunch from back then… There are some out here now but I’m guessing they aren’t household names like that outside of a Tyler and Kendrick or something.

But is East Coast radio promoting these acts? That's the point. The East doesn't want these ppl to be the representative, the same way The West has been perfectly fine with Jazz Rap and even experimental rap Kendrick holding down the west. They all got in formation for Dot, even when the haters were saying "Kendrick never did local westcoast rap and never put the hood and gangsters on". Nobody outwest cared that Kendrick came across pretentious with experemental shyt. They all got in formation and rode with their guy. Westcoast radio, the streets, westcoast street artist, etc. Do you see the samething in NY with equivalent artist? :jbhmm:
