What about a clip full of rubber bullets when going on calls for the mentally ill.
I mean his mom called 911 it's not like the cops were responding to an armed robbery at a gas station.

It seems they had tasers that they could have used I guess. Also it seems they were a little too close from the door but it may be the protocol, I don't know. My first concern is how the situation escalated and I feel it could have been avoided
In France, the police have what is called Flashballs (there are multiple versions) :
This is a rubber ball gun (which has 2 separate rubber balls at a time, one in each cannon) which is supposedly non-lethal. It is used by the police force since 2002 and since then there has been a dozen of serious injuries and possibly one death. The main rule in using it is to never shoot horizontally to avoid the head but some policemen (in the heat of the action I guess) have used the normal shooting stance and by doing so, blinded people. Also rubber balls rebound so it can be tricky too.
