Does violence or the threat of violence solve anything?

I mean historically, could we have arrived where we are in the world right now without it? For example if no one opposed the Nazi's during WW2 would they have just stopped on their own? Could a peaceful solution have been found? Or another example would Slavery had ended in Haiti without a rebellion? Could they have come to terms? Would it have ended here without slave revolts?
