Reginald Dennis (who ran The Source’s editorial department) admitted he fukked up not giving The Chronic 5 Mics and that it set the stage for people to think there was a bias against the west. Funny enough, the only album to get 5 mics under his watch between 90-94 was Illmatic and he said he didn’t even like it

From: The Source Magazine (Early 90's) Part 1: The Greatest Story Never Told

“I set the ceiling at 4.5; it happened on my watch and I take full responsibility for the error.

Not giving The Chronic 5 mics did two things. One, it increased the level of background talk that The Source was biased against the West Coast. And two, it made getting 5 mics in The Source all the more desirable. In 1992, The Source was still the law of the land and people tended to go along with it. So, if The Chronic wasn’t worthy of 5 mics, then what was? It also elevated the historic status and overall value of the half dozen or so records that had received 5s in the past. By not getting 5 mics, The Chronic did more to elevate the status of the 5 mic club than any record that had previously received the award. It was the event that cemented the mics as Hip Hop’s governing standard.”
They also have matw, doggystle 4 mics and thuglife 3.5 I believe.
But what real nikka cares what some Asian whore thinks anyway?

His peers you named were born on the east and the younger folks you named were influenced by the ever powerful bias media. As far as Dre, despite being the goat, he was lost and confused after Death Row, thank God he found some direction with Eminem.

So everybody who ever said a complimentary thing about Illmatic or Nas is just inherently biased? They can't just be a fan? This is a dumb ass take.

It's not about THEM being bias. The media behind it was bias. So what might of been a regional classic, was allowed to be considered a bona-fide classic through media brainwashing. Meanwhile any non east album of the mid nineties NEVER can get those media props UNLESS, they're a mega success. Which is why alot of non east albums that were selling on par or slightly faster than illmatic, are never included in the same conversation.

So the conversation usually is endless albums from an wild assortment of east albums, while, from the west it's limited to
Deathrow, ruthless alumni only. DOC,
NWA, DRE, CUBE, SNOOP, DOGG POUND, PAC, EAZY, that's it.

Some South albums from around that time got media props. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, Goodie Mob Soul Food, Scarface The Diary. Source gave Illmatic 5 mics but Source Awards 95 gave Outkast best new artist and Nas nothing. Same award show where Biggie said he was surprised he won best lyricist over Nas.

Outkast and face was popping more than nas in 1994 though

So my point remains.

Face was platinum in two months
Kast, 12 months

Gnause, around 80 months, despite the media love affair with illmatic.

It’s true, I agree :yeshrug:

Doggystyle was much more expansive, catchy and commercially viable. Illmatic was quite the opposite, but doesn’t mean it wasn’t dope.

It’s as simple as this the East media thought Nas was the one. So the promo was crazy. But the east coast fans chose Biggie instead. Then the media pivoted away from Nas

The media KEPT jocking illmatic, but they were forced to accept big was the king. He made it undeniable.

Ya'll do realize that the same entities that anointed Nas as "the one" also did the following:

1) Awarded Ready To Die 4.5 mics. And the only reason why it didn't get 5 is because they had a rule in place that only one album could get it within a single year. Illmatic dropped first.

2) Biggie was awarded Lyricist of the Year over Nas.

3) They put Biggie on the cover of the magazine as King of NY

If there was this whole media campaign for Nas, where was his magazine cover? Nas didn't cover The Source until 1996 and I think that was his first cover.

Breh u don’t compare a new guy to all the legends rolled into if u don’t think that person the anointed one. Nas was supposed to be the one since BBQ

How does this contradict anything I said?

Obviously they thought highly of Nas, but outside of 5 mics, whatvother accolades did they award him?

They thought those 5 mics would give them their “new guy”. The album flopped. And the ugly dude from BK was crowned by the people. That’s why biggie won lyricist of the year over a 5 mic album. The source hitched the wrong ride. Then changed course once they saw how the country loved Big. Nas career probably would been better if he never got that 5 mics for that album

The campaign was illmatic. But if course Nas wasn't on the cover till he had a greater opportunity at making them some money. Having him on their prior would be like burning money.
