Nas wrote Illmatic though that’s his penmanship. It’s well known DOC contributed heavy to that album though

It's not a toss up at all. Illmatic isn't even close to the top albums of the mid nineties. Coming out hard, which came out the same year as snoop, is better than illmatic. But since it's not from the east and (independenly) didn't do monster numbers, nikkas would laugh at the notion of it being in that conversation.

So wait, the media tried to make Illmatic a classic but it flopped, but also it only eventually sold well because of media hype?

The media didn't really have shyt to do with sales in the 90s other than the tabloid side of it. Reviews didn't have shyt to do with sales. Record labels and hit singles did. There's a reason IWW, I Am and Stillmatic are still Nas highest selling albums despite the media constantly hyping Illmatic and shytting on everything else he did.

Illmatic didn't sell at first because it had zero crossover appeal and no made-for-radio songs. RTD would've done similar numbers without Juicy and Big Poppa. And BIG didn't even wanna do those tracks but Puff convinced him.

LOL... is this supposed to be news?

There's a lot of albums better than Illmatic.

1. The Chronic
2. Amerikkka's Most Wanted
3. It Takes a Nation of Millions

I could go on....

Your excuses are pathetic. The bias media of the east has consistently overhyped illmatic (and other albums that weren't special from the east) and it benefitted from it. Younger men have been brought up in a world where illmatic has been bleached into their brains as a classic, despite it being only a minor footnote in 1994. These same media outlets minimized albums that sold similar or slightly better than illmatic during their initial runs, and have been swept under the rug, so that those that were not of age, haven't a clue what those albums meant on the streets or how good they were. And for the record I don't consider taking 7 years to go Platinum and 25 to go double, as selling well. But it's been in conversations due to the east bias media brainwash machine. I've never personally met anyone that thought illmatic was a goat level album.

I respect your determination to being a bad poster.
