Melle Mel is an all time great. You can't listen to 80s hip hop post Rakim, 90s, or 2000 to present and THEN listen to Melle Mel. That's not fair, because they all came after him. To really appreciate Melle Mel's greatness, you'd have to listen to all of the rappers in HIS ERA, then listen to him to see how much he was ahead of the competition and along with Caz were the best MC's of their era. The same applies to the NBA. Elgin Baylor was doing the acrobatic reverse layups prior to Dr J and Skywalker. Baylor led his team to the finals as a ROOKIE and at one point was in the Army part time while playing in the NBA and still averaging almost 40 pt and 20 rebounds for the season. hahaha. Dr J and Skywalker were influenced by Baylor and Jordan was influenced by Dr J and Skywalker. Melle Mel is probably the Elgin Baylor of hip hop. learn your history young man. You will benefit greatly form it.

Yup , Marley Marl would’ve fit better since he fathered the sample chop boombap

The problem with this logic is "Go DJ" came out in 2004, it very obviously didn't take 16 years to go platinum. Same with "The Carter", and a few other songs/albums. Half of them predate streaming.

Realistically it would've went plat before streaming even caught on, and now it's probably 2-3x plat due to streaming. But again....they haven't updated the numbers yet.

Fred.

It is highly likely that "Go DJ" did take 16 years to go platinum. Again, streaming was a catalyst. Of course those songs and albums pre-date streaming, but once they hit streaming platforms and streaming became popular, I'm sure it increased the consumption of those songs and albums exponentially. There are artists who had NO certifications prior to streaming, but their careers pre-date streaming. Dolly Pardon is getting certifications for music she released in the 70's. Everyone has benefited from streaming. Without streaming, a lot of music wouldn't even be getting these certifications because everything was based on physicals.

3-2 and Snoop were roommates in the early 90s and Dre wanted 3 to fukk wit the Death Row but he went back to Texas wit J. Snoop got the we don’t love dem hoes and really doe shyt from 3-2 and he uses 3-2 type vocal inflections when he says. He paid tribute and acknowledged his inspiration when 3-2 died.

Illmatic was gave you a beautiful listening visual of early 90s NYC.

Doggystyle had the entire country wanting to emulate the way of west coast life.

Illmatic is average at best. He has multiple albums better than it. I don't like the faux east coast media bias bullshyt narrative, like illmatic made a big splash in 1994,when i vividly remember it not meaning much at all, despite being in my household. Pasting verses isn't hard at all. If you really stand on the shyt u was talking. I thought Wayne rapping in circles was corny too. I respect the hustle, but when they was calling him BEST RAPPER ALIVE, I thought it was very comical. Never thought he was better than T.i. Or even Luda. But from a work standpoint, he really worked for that spot,so i respect it.
What albums Nas got better than Illmatic? I think It Was Written the closest but it got a handful of tracks that I feel is filler. I ain’t heard like the last 3 albums tho. And yea NY/East coast perception is different than the rest of the country I didn’t grow up on no Nas but I got into his music later. I grew up on Wayne and when I was younger he was the best to me but I can see why he’d get critiqued for his stream conscious type of rhyme style. That’s preference in styles tho like u gone say Ghostface abstract songs or trash or that Redman or Method Man wack cause they just be rapping to rap. Like I thought TI was cool I could listen to his albums but I could never really listen to a Luda album front to back like that his shyt was cartoonish to me but I respect it if somebody fukk wit that style.

Exactly. Illmatic just paints the picture perfect of what Nas was living like and what life was like around him during that time as well as his skill as an emcee. Doggystyle does the same thing for the west coast but in a more cinematic way .

Even arguing the streaming angle....Wayne's songs/albums didn't magically hit those numbers September 25, 2020.

That's when RIAA was updated. It has nothing to do with when it hit plat, etc.

"The Carter" went gold the same year they came out. Within a couple months.

So it took 15-16 more years to do an additional 500k? :gucci:

Of course not, 2020 was just when Wayne/his label reached out to RIAA to update his certifications. Which is why they're all listed on the same day....September 25, 2020.

I'm kinda confused as to why this is so hard to understand. You can ship a billion records, it doesn't matter. If you don't reach out to RIAA for an audit, and cut the check to start the process....they never update your certifications.

Not saying it magically hit platinum on September 25, 2020. It is also just as erroneous to think it shipped gold years prior. When the original Carter dropped, Wayne was a gold artist and wasn't platinum again until C2. Tha Carter wasn't lingering on the charts like Chronic 2001 is now, so there was really no need to go back and do an audit. I am 100% certain that once streaming took off, labels started doing audits left and right.

They weren't going to do that in the era where it was just physicals because it wasn't as fast as streaming.

Notice the theme.
To be considered a top album outside the east, you have to do big numbers.
To be a "classic" from the east, you can do poorly, just as long as the east coast bias media gets behind you to help paint a fictitious picture of what your album means.

You will never see an album from outside the east, from the mid nineties, that gets classic credits UNLESS it killed it at retail. But them east coasters have a rubber stamp at classic status.

I notIce you say this alot. But you have to factor in bootlegging in the east especially up north. nikkas did not buy records. Bootlegs killed sales

There's bootlegs everywhere. And these bootleggers don't discriminate who they bootleg. So you and anyone with that talking point is saying nothing.
