Well how did Method Man's debut album, Tical (released in 1994 same year as Illmatic) manage to go Gold 2 months after being released (Jan 18, 1995) & Platinum 5 months later
(July 13, 1995) while the GOD tier Nas during the golden age of hip hop couldn't?




Even Craig Mack debut album, FUNK DA WORLD went Gold 6 months after it's release in Sept 20, 1994.

Of course Illmatic is a classic .. but Doggystyle for me is one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made .. light years ahead of Illmatic imo

Not saying it magically hit platinum on September 25, 2020. It is also just as erroneous to think it shipped gold years prior. When the original Carter dropped, Wayne was a gold artist and wasn't platinum again until C2. Tha Carter wasn't lingering on the charts like Chronic 2001 is now, so there was really no need to go back and do an audit. I am 100% certain that once streaming took off, labels started doing audits left and right.

They weren't going to do that in the era where it was just physicals because it wasn't as fast as streaming.

RIAA tracks shipments not sales. I'm sure, within three months, there were 500K of Carter on the shelves. And yes, it is possible because of streaming that there was not enough data to certify another 500K until 2020. Why? It's not like they would've had a reason to re-stock shelves with Carter especially with the decline of the physicals since 2004. 2004 was like the last time physicals peaked.

There is a reason why first week sales are a big deal. He did 116K in his first week with that album. The chances of them shipping another 500K were slim. Gold and platinum measure demand not the actual units sold. If the demand is not there, why would a label order another audit? They see the trends and without something like a re-issue or an album getting a significant bump in sales, they aren't going to bother shipping more units to stores.

Just to give you an example if this, it isn't a coincidence that BOTH Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic went platinum in 2001. There was a renewed interest in both artists due to the beef and the anticipation of their new albums, so people went back to the beginning.

In addition to the quoted, Nas greatly benefitted greatly from bias media. I (whom had illmatic in my household Circa 1994) bought it for myself in the late 90'/early 00's because of the consistent east coast media hype train. Although I didn't remember it being that great. Upon repurchasing, i wasn't impressd. Very average.

Nas definitely set the bar for lyrics during that era but Doggystyle was undeniable, everybody was playing that album, really everybody,black,white and everything in between. I feel it also aged a bit better due to the production being more melody driven with great hooks and sequencing.

Nas confirmed the power of East coast bias media. Nas has been painted into a 1994 hip hop Don, with Illmatic being painted as a master piece. In real life he was a pee wee and his average album flopped

I disagree with your take but thats why we can agree to do that,the album didnt flop and considering most of the top tier artists during that era didnt even see 25 kinda makes that a moot point.

My take is rooted in fact. It's a fact that amongst other debut albums of 1994, it didn't do well.
The numbers are well documented, so it's beyond "my take". I know what it's "cosidered" and I'm aware of the bias east media's push to get it there.

Both albums are all time classics but Illmatic had zero crossover appeal and didn't attempt to.

Whereas Doggystyle had multiple catchy made for radio tracks that hooked listeners who weren't that into rap. Snoop was a huge star before it even dropped off guest starring on The Chronic, that's still one of the biggest rap albums of all time.

Got no issue with anyone picking Doggystyle but this obsession with record sales in talking quality of music gets old. Guess Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em is better than both then
