Well how did Method Man's debut album, Tical (released in 1994 same year as Illmatic) manage to go Gold 2 months after being released (Jan 18, 1995) & Platinum 5 months later
(July 13, 1995) while the GOD tier Nas during the golden age of hip hop couldn't?

:sas2:

Even Craig Mack debut album, FUNK DA WORLD went Gold 6 months after it's release in Sept 20, 1994. :mjlol:

Wu-Tang was blowing up huge in 1993 into 1994. Meth was positioned as the star of the group in a Lotta ways on 36 Chambers. And the Mary J Blige joint was a huge crossover radio hit. Meth was on Def Jam and got a big push on that album, not really a mystery.

That's not the point.

Nas, like Method Man, was one of the great, heralded, up & coming acts in NY/hip-hop during the mid 90's & he delivered as expected on his debut solo album, while Nas, with Illmatic didn't.

Method Man was more well known than Nas in 1994. He was part of a group that blew up in the year leading up to his solo album. He had a smash hit single with one of the biggest R&B stars of the era. There's no logical reason Nas should have sold more than him with Illmatic

It's funny, you can spot the people who weren't actually there for the 90s. But Method Man was one of the biggest stars in hip hop from around 1994-2001. Had multiple platinum solo albums, a platinum plus duo album with Redman, was the biggest star in a group that had a pair of 4x platinum albums, was on TV and movies. But now dudes act like he was some sort of underground act or something.

:mjlol: at the never ending record sales conversation

Both albums are all time classics but Illmatic had zero crossover appeal and didn't attempt to.

Whereas Doggystyle had multiple catchy made for radio tracks that hooked listeners who weren't that into rap. Snoop was a huge star before it even dropped off guest starring on The Chronic, that's still one of the biggest rap albums of all time.

Got no issue with anyone picking Doggystyle but this obsession with record sales in talking quality of music gets old. Guess Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em is better than both then
Please hammer don't hurt em is better than Illmatic, yes. Not cause the sales, it's just better music, more bona-fide classic songs. Anyways. Nas sampled the biggest album of all time trying to succeed and was salty when that swv right here remix came out cause he felt it could fukk him up. Illmatic just want that good. Luckily Nas learned from a real hip hop Don and changed everything for IWW, and he finally start popping.

This really is a fair comparison, why? There are a lot of people who treat Doggystyle and Illmatic are the only dope albums of their respective careers. They are the only two MC's who have that type pressure applied whenever they dropped. With Snoop, people just quit comparing somewhere after Blue Carpet Treatment. With Nas, every project is still compared to Illmatic. People still want another Snoop album produced by Dr. Dre the same way people want another Nas album with the Illmatic lineup or at least an album produced by Premo.

No, it's a flop vs a monumental success. And it's only in the conversation due to east coast bias. The nas people know and love, was born on IWW. The creativity, subject matter, etc.

Breh, my post had nothing to do with which album was more successful. It was merely an observation of how each album is viewed in their respective careers. Regardless if what Illmatic sold or didn't sell, it is still held as the standard for Nas.

It's a media created "classic" and the myth of fans wanting another one is also a media creation. I'd take another Stillmatic though. Doggystyle is real deal, people REALLY would like another one of those.

That has nothing to do with media, but it's a sector of Nas fans that hold Illmatic as the standard for Nas. It's Hip Hop heads in general who hold that album as the standard for Nas.

I'm going to put it this way.

Doggystyle is like that chick that bust your virginity and you had good times with.

Illmatic is your first love that became your wife.

Huge difference.
