What's not the point?
Method Man was more well known than Nas in 1994. He was part of a group that blew up in the year leading up to his solo album. He had a smash hit single with one of the biggest R&B stars of the era. There's no logical reason Nas should have sold more than him with Illmatic
Are you really this stupid? No one ever mentioned that Nas was supposed to sell more records than Method Man, but the fact that it took Illmatic nearly 2 years to become RIAA certified Gold, in the heyday of rap, speaks volumes.
Furthermore, there were also numerous hip hop artists in 1994 that were lesser or just as well known than Nas, who didn't have the Source Magazine 5 Mic seal of approval, yet still reached RIAA Gold/Platinum status before Nas & Illmatic.

Therefore, I don't think you really want to go down the road with comparisons vs which hip hop artist were more/less known/popular during 1994 & their RIAA certifications based on sales numbers/units.

It's funny, you can spot the people who weren't actually there for the 90s. But Method Man was one of the biggest stars in hip hop from around 1994-2001. Had multiple platinum solo albums, a platinum plus duo album with Redman, was the biggest star in a group that had a pair of 4x platinum albums, was on TV and movies. But now dudes act like he was some sort of underground act or something.
I'm a O.G. nikka, so you can miss with your useless biography.
At the end of the day, it's obvious that you're just another Nas Stan trying to derail the topic with meaningless trivial babble, which has nothing to do with Nas album Ilmatic, flopping on the sales & record charts during one of the most celebrated eras of hip hop.
