You said a lot without saying anything.

How could that be dunce when we're not actually talking?

Outside of NYC, Method Man was a much bigger name than Nas in 1994. He also had the R&B crossover megahit that Nas lacked.

Outside of NYC, there were also numerous hip hop artists who didn't have the industry buzz or "a much bigger name than Nas in 1994" nor a "R&B crossover megahit," nevertheless,
they still achieved RIAA Certified Gold/Platinum status before Nas Illmatic.

It's obvious why Method Man sold more copies in 1984 and 1995.

You mean 1994, not 1984, pseudo rap historian. :pachaha:

It's also obvious why Nas album from 1994 has since doubled up Meth's in sales.

What's "also obvious" is that after Illmatic's release in 1994, Nas debut album continues to be outsold by less popular (at the time) hip hop artists who had debut albums in 1994 as well.

:heh:

Illmatic is a much better album than Tical and has aged better. It just took longer for national and international audiences to catch on due to the lack of a MTV/BET/radio hit single.
Yeah, .just 7 long.....................................................years to reach certified platinum. :mjlol:

What are you babbling about? What's your point? Do you have one? Is your argument that Tical > Illmatic and Meth > Nas because Meth sold more records in 1994?

Like your homey you seem to got the gift of jibber jabbering without saying a thing

Damn Nas was getting left behind. Good thing the media kept talking him up.

Are you saying it took Illmatic 12 years to go platinum? That’s false, it took less than 7.

My bad, ".just less than 7"...................... long years! :pachaha:

But none of those artists were less popular than Nas in 94 AND had a debut album in 94 that outsold Illmatic.
Coolio, Brat and Kast are platinum while Illmatic is double platinum.
Warren G, Big and Bone were all more popular in 94.

I was expecting to see that Word…Life had recently been certified triple platinum :dead:

Illmatic has TWO re-releases. Biggie's Ready To Die also got a re-release.

False! Coolio, Da Brat & Bone, Thugs & Harmony were relative unknowns compared to Nas (who was called the next Rakim) & they didn't have the same popularity or street buzz as artists until after their debut releases.

Coolio, Brat and Kast are platinum while Illmatic is double platinum.

Coolio, Da Brat & Outcast also didn't re-release their debut albums to boost sales like Nas did with Illmatic.

Not true. Bone, Thugs & Harmony/CREEPIN' ON AH COME UP has clearly outsold Nas Illmatic by leaps & bounds.

In fairness riaa certifications dates aren’t always correct on when albums went gold or platinum, the person that submits a request to review how much it’s sold has to be consistent with it for example

If rapper ___ releases a album and its a well known fact that it sold well if he waits 2 years until he submits a riaa certificate his album will show that it went gold or platinum after 2 years when in reality it possibly went platinum within months but he just waited to long to submit.

5 mics were a huge deal, but Illmatic going platinum and double platinum had little to do with it. Nas blew up with It Was Written and his fame grew throughout the 90's into the '00's. As Nas got bigger, so did Illmatic. Why? People who became fans of his later albums went back and copped Illmatic. Especially since he named 5th album Stillmatic, so fans of that album went back to the original. Then it got a re-release in 2004 and another in 2014.

Also, in regard to Illmatic being a flop, it wasn't the only flop of 1994. It wasn't even the biggest. Nas's lablemates, The Fugees, dropped Blunted On Reality that same year. Months before the album came out, Lauryn starred in Sister Act 2. Album still flopped. Like Nas, The Fugees didn't blow until 1996. Nobody went back and copped Blunted like that because it was widely considered not a good album. The Score is their classic and Blunted really is a footnote.

My point is, if "bias East Coast media" dictated album sales, It Was Written would've flopped as many panned it because it wasn't Illmatic. They gave Doggystyle 4 mics and that album is one of the biggest Hip Hop albums ever. Clearly, "bias East Coast media" didn't have the juice that it's being made out to have. Furthermore, EVERY Hip Hop album that moved units in 1994 had a heavy West Coast flavor or was a West Coast album. Wu Tang was the only East Coast centric group that moved units.

What are we talking about her exactly? You’ve referenced popularity initially, but for Nas you’re bringing up him being the next Rakim, which isn’t something that would result in mainstream success. Plus you are talking about street buzz also. That’s not popularity/commercial success. So are talking about popularity/commercial success or acclaim in the underground/street buzz? It can’t be both.
As for Coolio, Brat and Bone, their lead singles from their 94 albums, which, iirc, all dropped before the album, catapulted them well beyond Nas in terms of commercial success/popularity. Which is why their albums initially sold more.

Coolio, Da Brat & Outcast also didn't re-release their debut albums to boost sales like Nas did with Illmatic.
How much of Illmatic’s sales are directly attributable to the re-releases?
