horrible thread y'all :scust:

nas didn't sell much because 1 his music didn't crossover and 2 columbia didn't know how to market rap, hence big l, fugees first joint and constipated monkeys didn't do well. only cypress hill managed to sell records and they had the songs for

but nas and illmatic got critical aclaim like a few rare album had at that time. I don't see why there's so much discussion

I'm one of those people that believe IWW is Nas' best work so this current debate is kind of hilarious to me.

I did go back to relisten to both back to back and I have to say Doggystyle holds up much much better. That was just a special time for the west coast man.

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
fukk Nas Coalition assembled in here. :mjlol: Babbling about sales and all kinds of dumb hater shyt. Trying to rewrite history. Probably got too much sodium in your diets. Both of these albums are classics. I personally prefer illmatic and rate it higher. But I ain’t mad at anyone who has doggystyle higher on their list.

Guess you realized it was only so long you could keep trolling by repackaging paragraphs & duplicating the same comments over & over. :mjlol:

The discussion was over before it started. :jawalrus:

"Hip hop became a best-selling genre in the mid-1990s and the top-selling music genre by 1999."

No matter how you feel about Nas as an artist/MC, his debut album Illmatic, sold poorly during the most successful era of rap & wasn't a commercial success initially.

94 wasn’t the most successful era of rap. But your overall point, on a surface level, is accurate. I’ve been trying to go deeper and have a nuanced discussion on this, but you just want to :troll:on the surface, so carry on.

Do you acknowledge that Coolio, Brat and Bone were making a very different hip hop compared to Illmatic?
And, fukk is your point?
Your EXCUSE is "well he didn't sound like them". I know he didn't. And he wasn't really popping but has been rewarded and praised as if he was

This.

Illmatic wasn't going to be this top seller in 1994 because it was an outlier to what was hot the time. G Funk was still the dominant sound of the day. Every album that was selling had G Funk vibe.

Very aware. Now imagine they had the east coast media's unwavering cheerlading to help push them even further.

Nas a legend, but illmatic is grossly overrated and it's legacy was created by bias media. It wasnt some organically beloved Alvin that had the streets raving, from coast to coast. That's Cap

Nobody has done that though. Yeah, there's people who will tell you that Nas ran '94, but obviously those people weren't around to even have an opinion. Nas is my favorite rapper, and while Illmatic is his most acclaimed album, 1994 wasn't even the biggest year of his career. Obviously, Illmatic made an impact though, a huge one even if it was mostly on the East Coast. Mobb Deep, Wu, and Kool G. Rap had him on their albums. There were bigger rappers commercially, but Nas was sought after.

So the top excuses are
1. Bootleggers specifically targeting Nas
2. Riaa taking their Time with Nas certifications
3. And he wasn't supposed to sale cause he didn't use g-funk.

#3 isn't an excuse. Every album you listed that sold records had G Funk. The only real exception I saw was Meth and 69 Boyz. Data actually supports claim #3.
