Nobody is forcing anyone to use any of the services that Google and their parent corporation, Alphabet offer (Search, phone, email, etc.). People choose to use them out of convenience/ease of use/because everyone else is doing it/they're too lazy to look into alternatives.

No one said that and it's not relevant. However...the Play Store alone has powers that come as close to a virtual monopoly as you can get. Not to mention YouTube's impact on society. Their ad policies alone have been one of the most detrimental factors in the deterioration of mental health of young people.

Nobody is forcing Google to abuse its powers. And yet it is. This is what anti-trust laws are for. Why are people mad and caping for a soulless corporation?

I'm not caping for a soulless corporation. I want the government to do their fukking job and start giving a shyt about consumer privacy/wellbeing instead of marching in big tech CEOs and get clowned on in front of millions of viewers all over the country and file meaningless lawsuits. They have the power to regulate, but they keep trying to fit circles into squares with outdated antitrust laws and get clowned on every time.

The government looks like a clown if they do and try nothing. This is the very least they should have been doing 10+ years ago. But the most important thing this does is to send a signal to the masses of people using Google products like mindless sheep that this is not the kind of organization with their best interests at heart. Google has a positive image for most people using their products and services. That needs to change.

Microsoft and Apple also come to mind

:manny:
I disagree, Microsoft hasn't had a monopoly in sometime and has completely went the other way in regards to anti trust. Windows is a completely open source platform which offers a subscription service in its open platform. Azure has 3 massive competitors, and surface is well.... surface lol

Anti trust isnt necessarily a monopolymonopoly. Monopolies often do anti trust activities though.

Quick example: the vast majority of companies use office 365 in some capacity. Whenever something becomes super popular (i.e. Tableau/Zoom) Microsoft typically will offer their version to their customers as a part of O365 for free/way cheaper than the competitors... These companies then switch to the Microsoft version because it's a no brainer especially since they all integrate. I work in consulting and I've seen this so often

By doing what they're currently doing amounts to nothing. Hence why I say they look like clowns. What did they accomplish in their last suit with Facebook? couple billion dollars in fines LOL. Drop in the bucket.

To tech companies it's cheaper to pay billions in fines so they'll do it all day long until the gov't finally decides to get off its ass, hire some people who actually know how consumer data is stored/used by them, and put some regulations in place to protect consumers.

Yeah they definitely use Chrome as a vehicle to maintain control of sorts. MS had to drop their own Web renderer as Google found out some of MS's tricks and fukked it.

For example, they send stupid layouts to non Chrome browsers so rendering takes a little longer, uses more CPU (and thus battery), and the ways of getting longer playback times on YT were stuffed by changing the codecs and player traits served.

Of course Google hides it as "compatibility" stuff but we know the deal. It's to keep people in once they step in. Something like how Opera handled battery life would be outside of Google's reach, but players shouldn't have to forcefully work around Google. It's dikkish behavior like the old MS embrace, extend, extinguish.
