Having two different nations isolated on such a small island seems dumb. They should fuse with one another and be done with it. Their brand of nationalism might lead to violence.

Cut all diplomatic relations = stop all business relations.

Cut all import/export deals with the Haitian elites.

Send all those bullshyt products to Cuba or Jamaica.

That way - both the Dominican and Haitian elites can suffer.

But the DR gov't refuses to do that for some reason.
They know better. Way too much money for them to lose.

Dominican to Haiti exports: US$1.64B to ‘negligible’ US$7M

Cyprus is even smaller and divided in half...

I never hear ppl saying Portugal and Spain should fuse into one either.

Both sides, DR and Haiti, just need to worry about themselves and handle their business

Exactly... Haitian & Dominican elites smoke cigars and eat fried pork together

Making big money.

The average Haitian/Dominican elite probably makes between $10 to $30 million each month.

OP is just a sex tourist acting like a Dominican nationalist.

If you lived here for an extended time, you’d start to understand. I touched down with a certain narrative and now I fully understand. You can peep the antagonist tone and arrogance in this thread by a certain contingent and make no mistake that’s common.
Fully understand what exactly? Towards whom and what?

Cyprus has seen its fair share of violence and despite the effective division, a single government has legal authority over the island...

The Iberian Peninsula also has an extensive history of conflict. If Spanish-Portugal relationships are good today, I'd say it's mainly due to the XXth european context and their strong cooperation.

My simple-minded analysis is that there's no peaceful way out of this one without cooperation. I don't see the DR minding its own business if it feels existentially threatened... But nationalism with no chaser and xenophobia aren't going to go well.

:unimpressed:

How will that resolve US destabilization of the western half of Hispaniola?

BTW - Haiti controlled the entire island until the early-to-‘mid 19th century

I do too.

I’m a little confused at why you took a shot at people who feel the same as you when it comes to your homeland.
I made that comment because many of the posters here that are against illegal immigrations towards the US , are not against illegal immigrations when it has to do with other countries such as Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They usually just call them c00ns and that they are not welcoming Haitians because they are black , when that's not the full picture.

It's not meant to be the panacea. It's meant to fix the illegal immigration issue and alleviate the potential for xenophobic violence.

Post was kinda tongue-in-cheek anyway. The more realistic version is that they need cooperation.

If y’all read Confronting Black Jacobins you’ll get to find out all about the way DR even came into existence. I’ll give you two hints, it involves America and a project of destabilization/Balkanization along the lines of identity.

The bullshyt they pull all the time now was learned and perfected on the island of Hispaniola.
