A racist white man would not put a black man on if he has the potential to get fame and money especially from the wm’s woman. Y’all be saying some dumb fukking shyt on here just to be saying it.

Then why put them on? That’s a dumb fukking statement coming from a long line of dumb fukking statements from you.
Like many people in these positions, it’s about putting their friends and people in their circle on, not about the actual demographic. Donald Glover ain’t thinking about improving the status of black women on screen or off screen as a whole.

Layering a character doesn’t mean humanizing them imo, although that’s what those shows did.

How he said it was stupid, but I get what he was going for. The main issue is that it doesn’t seem to make sense to have a character with no layers for a story like this, which is probably why black folks don’t like it :yeshrug:
Well, he did say that he did not want them "that layered". He still added a layer or two if you will but did not go as far as some others seem to do, humanizing the characters to such an extent that it seems like they are trying to make the viewer feel sorry for them or at least soften the despicable nature or aspect of that given character that made them act as they did, often times, by robbing them of agency. What bothers me about the criticism is that it seems very amorphous. Then again, it is in that vagueness that makes this whole thing seem like much ado about nothing.

The genre he was going for plays a part in this as well.

I do agree that he could have stated things differently but at least he's being straight-forward.

A white person isn’t going to put an entire team of anything but their own on. But even Trump had black people on his cabinet.

If Donald is creating a black show, about a black woman, of course he needs a black team. Plus, he knows if the team was white, black women wouldn’t tune in as much. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t hate black women. The black female team is helping him make money, not be his friends and lovers. I’m just sick of the hypocrisy of bashing black women for dating non black men, and encouraging the opposite from black men. He openly bashed black women. That makes others feel justified. I don’t believe in publicly bashing your own people. That should happen behind closed doors.

“Chris Rock told me, ‘Man, they wouldn’t have let me make your show back in the day.’ I’m a little better than Chris, because I had Chris to study. And now I am actively looking for the black female to replace me.”

This was 2018. Again, since that time a BLACK WOMAN, Janine Nabers pitched him the series Swarm. Donald not only utilized his platform to get the series made, he also put the black WOMAN who pitched the idea in charge. He gave a BLACK WOMAN (Malia Obama) her first writing credit and recruited a BLACK WOMAN to direct the majority of the episodes.

Doesn’t sound like somebody who hates black women to ME. Sounds like he’s actively keeping his promise.

On the subject of him dating white women because of the “Black women didn’t like me when I was young” bullshyt. Go ahead, criticize him for THAT because that rhetoric has always been lame and its always been an excuse in my opinion. If anyone criticized him for that then its valid.

But criticizing him for any depictions or characterizations in Swarm (and even Atlanta to a lessor extent) of black women is absolute bullshyt, as the series is CREATED and RAN by BLACK WOMEN

There are literally only SEVEN black women who serve as showrunners on mainstream American television, because of the ally-oop from Donald Glover Janine Nabers can count herself as one of those 7

Not only is this patently false (Glover hired writers from all over not just childhood friends) but also funny how the goal posts get moved for Glover. The best way to put on for your people is to put on your people. Look at how Jews get down with Larry David and Seinfeld and Jason Alexander and Julia Louis Dreyfus,, Apatow and Sandler then Apatow with James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen and Jason Siegel. They all put the tribe as a whole on by putting on the ones they know.

They were helping him make money. Smart people jump on opportunities to make money. He uses black women when they can make him money.

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. I’m saying that doesn’t mean they’re trying to put on an entire demographic. Jewish people have been on in entertainment since the entertainment industry was created.

Also, someone doesn’t have to be childhood friend to be in your circle or around your circle. Donald Glover ain’t walking around looking for unknown black female writers to take their submissions. He’s getting people he knows or referrals. Once again, there’s nothing wrong with that. But we can’t spin him putting on a few black women as him being a champion for the cause.

Dr Carson was a millionaire before Trump, he didn’t make him a millionaire, stop it. That’s not “putting him on”.

Nobody knows who that other guy is, so wtf are you talking about.

Y’all nikkas move goalposts for putting people in the industry

Stefani Robinson was an unknown with ZERO credits to her name when Donald hired her to write for Atlanta. Her writing for Atlanta literally launched her career.

They were helping him make money. Smart people jump on opportunities to make money. He uses black women when they can make him money.

Its only “using” if its not mutually beneficial. Again, working with Donald Glover made Janine Nabers one of only SEVEN black woman show-runners in the industry. Working with Donald Glover made Stefani Robinson the ONLY Black Woman at the time to have a development deal with FX. Working with Donald Glover gave Malia Obama her FIRST television writing credit. He’s helping as much as he’s gaining and in the case of Swarm, black women are gaining the most
