I’m a hematologist (blood doctor) with a focus on sickle cell and aging research.
On June 16, 2025 my 5-year $750,000 NIH grant (K award) to improve care for adults with sickle cell disease was terminated suddenly and unjustly. I created the first and only functional assessment tool and first and only exercise program tailored to the unique needs of older adults with sickle cell disease called SickleFit. The termination notice stated that research with equity objectives do nothing to expand our knowledge of living systems, are “low return on investment”, and don’t enhance health. And diversity, equity, inclusion harms the health of Americans. Sickle cell disease is a life-limiting genetic disorder that impacts people of ALL racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Ending this project not only silences promising solutions for a neglected group of patients, but also sends a devastating message to future researchers that even life-changing, evidence-based science can be discarded without cause.
