Most of you probably don't fly often but this happens across all airlines.

Also I am sure United offered some money and a hotel stay for giving up a seat. I got $500 and a free hotel of my choosing(voucher limit) to give up my seat coming back from Vegas once. I had nothing to do the following day so it was a no brainer for me, flight was like 12 hours later.
