Neither article you posted clarified whether the subscriptions are gold or not. Silver is considered a "subscription" by MS, just as Sony does with their non-Plus accounts.

For those not in the loop (most of you) only Sony reports based on gamertags used. So in the case of claddyclown, who has 5 secret accounts, that would be counted as five users.
Why do that you ask? Because the truth before the ps4 forced subscriptions for online multiplayer was dismal in comparison to Xbox live subs.
Xbox only reports subscriptions aka what they profit off of. The rare times they did speak on totals they make THAT clear. They don't have to point this out every month
