You probably CAN use it underwater, but the pressure will probably get to the phone alongside the resist wearing out. What's the rating for then? Use of the phone in smaller amounts of water and avoiding damage from accidents like the sink, toilet, or puddle. It's the only way these devices are "waterproof".

As another example resist watches usually are only meant to battle when you wash your hands under the tap. You take it swimming you're running the higher chance of getting fukked. Nobody's getting sued.
it must have some sort of 'flaps' that protect the usb and headphone ports. they probably work under optimal conditions, but if dirt, lint, or whatever, gets in there, it won't seal properly

I had an xperia z1 when it first came out and I never had any problems using it underwater:yeshrug:. The only reason I stopped using it is because I fukked up the charging port and was unable to charge it.

Sony outright lying about its products capabilities? Im shocked, shocked i tell you!
They arent saying you can't use it underwater, they are telling people not to because the conditions that keeps the phone waterproof rated (that they have met) was achieved in a control setting while casual users do not. It just has to be waterproof for atleast 30min about 1m deep. Im sure that they aren't a centimeter deeper and snatch those phones out the water the very second they hit the requirement. Just as Im sure that most people using the phone underwater do so deeper than what is recommended and probably for longer period of times. The typical user would probably put the phone in their boardshorts pocket while they swim (which will often be deeper than 1m) and will swim for more than 30min. Both of these conditions exceed what the phone is certified and recommended for. Both of these conditions are what most people will end up doing with the phone. Sony is just being preemptive by making this statement. No different than a kevlar company telling you don't shoot your friend in the chest to test if its actually bulletproof.

"It is, but we still don't recommend it."
