he's 1 of the legendary producers we never talk about on here. how come?

he put in work in the golden era of hip hop and helped lay the foundation for great records for run dmc, ll cool j and the beastie boys and executive produced public enemy early albums

and on top of that, he was co founder of def jam records with russell simmons

i'm watchin' this interview right now and it just got me thinkin' bout how i never see his name get bought up on here among the usual favorite hip hop producers and yet he's a legend in this shyt

he's legendary as a producer in several genres but as far as Hip Hop he's more important as a founder of Def Jam than a producer IMO. yes he did shape the sound of Hip Hop in the early years but i think Larry Smith is more integral to the SOUND of artists like Run DMC which Rick gets a lot of credit for. as a producer he's great but there's better in Hip Hop.

The songs/albums he has produced is insane, maybe it's just because the timing of his work, a lot of classic stuff in the early days. But the later things he did produce outside of hip hop overshadow what he did do in hip hop.

Some of the Johnny Cash stuff is legendary

He's very important to the genre overall but I wouldn't call him a great beatmaker. LL's debut is probably his best work.

Musically he didn't contribute anything to those PE albums other than maybe a Slayer sample.
