All these stats are nothing seeing as drake don't make shyt from streaming. Didn't he only make like 100k personally from all those billions streams last year and the labels took millions.savage shyt. Universal and birdman are exploiting him.

1) He was one of the biggest pop artists at a time when streaming became the most popular way to listen to music.

Now you can put a single on repeat from your phone and go about your day. If you had a tape or CD you probably listened to the whole thing (probably skipped some songs) because if you didn't really like the album it wouldn't be in rotation.

I would be interested in seeing the overall percentage of Spotify streams from the top 5 artists. shyt I bet even the top 20 songs have a significant percentage of streams considering one of their selling points is access to over a million songs.

2) There were 2,796,014,365 less people on Earth when Thriller came out than in 2016.

3) The increase in global population, the corporate manipulation of hip hop (music in general), and technological accessibility of individual "hot" "cool" tracks have without a doubt influenced this 10billi benchmark (which is significant and deserves to be acknowledged, but from a production/consumer angle rather than artistic milestones).

3.5) If you ever called a rapper a plant, or hate because they are universally acclaimed, you better not be a wheelchair Jerry stan

4) Drake is an important contemporary artist, and while I would never compare the two, I'm sure there were purist elites hating on MJ like some old heads hate on Drake now.

Purists hated Miles and Mingus too.

I'd rather listen to Mingus fart in an imaginary paleophone than wait for a new Drake song to leak, but that's not the point.

Popular isn't always good and critically acclaimed don't always mean classic.

5) There was no reason to make this a list. It reads like a Art and Nap Polymerization, but I'm procrastinating on writing a paper.

TLDR: History, methodology, and context brehs.
