Hip-Hop fans are unique. Every other genre of music equates high sales with selling out and catering to the lowest common denominator. Fans of movies, tv, books, art would never equate popularity with quality either.
Not sure what that says about the culture.

Certain genres fans (punk, indie rock, most metal, electronic, jazz amongst others) are extremely hostile to popularity while others may have a more balanced view. As far as I can tell hip-hop fans are the only ones who routinely say “this album or artist sold more so that makes them better”.
