Drake is from Canada and was an actor. That already makes his upbringing unrelatable to the average Black American who grew up in a majority Black US city.
Drake really had to lean on his female fanbase to get into the game. His music was very female oriented and he used his previous fanbase from Degrassi to start his buzz.

He also got some street cred linking with Lil Wayne and Birdman. Without them, he would not have been able to get an edgier image and woulda been boxed into only talking about dating and relationships in his raps.
