To be honest, Her Loss and Future's I Never Liked You album from around that time blew up big because of the toxic songs. Right now hip-hop is going through it's male vs female, modern No Pigeons/No Scrubs era because of the explosion with all the female rappers.
I'm willing to bet if this album had the same vibe to it people would've loved it, but at the sake of his female fans which have been a big part of his success. Future wouldn't mind it but Drake has done a great job balancing out the approach with both crowds basically his whole career. Go harder with the rapping one release, start singing the next. It's never 100% all singing/rapping, but there is a preference/theme each album. Drake definitely left on the softer simp/apologetic side this album because he went toxic mode last time.
I'm surprised people haven't picked up on his game all these years. Every time dude sings everyone starts calling him soft so he goes to rapping. When people think he acting too tough, then he starts singing to tone it down. Dude been playing off what the crowd gives him whereas most artists are a one-trick pony. Hiatus is probably because dude is legit tired. Now he can take a break and nobody knows which Drake will make an entrance next time.
