To me Dred always reminded me of the crakkheads on my block.. but that was before crack. So life must have been very hard for brothers back then.

Anyway:
The United States Supreme Court in this case decided that no person of African ancestry could claim citizenship of the United States.

This case lets us know everything we needed to know about this nation and though it may not seem like this statement still holds true.... it is still true. We are fooling ourselves.

He tried to purchase his freedom.. He earned the money to buy himself and his daughters and wife... and still couldn't buy it. The state he lived in had slavery as something illegal to do. And he still was told he could not sue. Later on... EVEN Calvin Chaffee who was supposedly opposed to slavery (just like the cac today who we believe are our allys) tried to send Dred back to the original family that owned him.

That says everything to me about our position in this nation from the 1600- 2014.

a messed up cycle if you will

yeah, or as they liked to call it "the people have the power." They fooled everyone on that one

Actually no, State Sovereignty is actually one of the keystones of the Constitution. By law the Federal Govt. can't MAKE a State do anything. They can offer them incentives or have Federal officials perform the task themselves, but if you learn how Jurisdiction and Federalism works you'll realize that State Sovereignty is one of the most important aspects of the US Govt.

There was also Bleeding Kansas.

Proslavery forces said every settler had the right to bring his own property, including slaves, into the territory. Antislavery "free soil" forces said the rich slaveowners would buy up all the good farmland and work them with black slaves, leaving little or no opportunity for non-slaveowners.

So zero court cases, wars, legislation, laws, etc..... were ever about treating africans trapped in America like human beings. It's all about what cac love the most.. power and money.

My point is that its all bullshyt though like the entire constitution. The federal government can make a state do whatever it wants based off of violence. Washignton did it, Jackson did it, and imperialist capitalism drove the states to construct oppressive apartheid conditions...my point is that the people don't have say in shyt unless the systemic racial oppression of the federal government does not approve

Popular sovereignty- the notion that the people decide matters, is one that has been sold to, in particular whites, so that they actually feel empowered.

:ld: This is actually a tough one, it's not as cut and dried as it's being made out to be in this thread. We have to face the simple fact that there is a very small segment of any population that are qualified to be part of its govt., The majority of people should NOT be making decisions that affect the nation. I'm not denying that there is corruption in the govt. or that there is a lot of pandering to rich folk, but I don't see how you can effectively run a country without giving deference/power to some system of Govt. and giving them the authority to carry out their law/policies.

Good point here.
