The amount of people and the size of the city.

If it was a compact/dense city there'd probably be a more efficient transportation system and traffic wouldn't be as bad.

Los Angeles and the surrounding counties all commute to work by driving to and from the city. Some folks come from/ go to as far as San Diego while most are from Orange County. We don't build housing vertically in Los Angeles like in a city such as New York. It's more spread out and that means the commute to and from work are done with cars and a few freeways.
