DROSE back in jail held on $1M bond for alleged murder of 14-year-old

A 17-year-old boy has been ordered held on $1 million bail in a February drive-by shooting on the South Side that left a high school freshman dead.

Ahbir Sardin was charged with first-degree murder in the Feb. 12 killing of Venzel Richardson, a student at Dunbar Vocational High School.

Prosecutors said Richardson had just exited a convenience store located at 61st Street and King Drive and began walking with a group toward Vernon Avenue. The group saw a white minivan drive down Vernon and stop.

While southbound on Vernon, the group saw Sardin open the side door of the van and fire multiple times at Richardson. After being shot, Richardson fell in a gangway, where he died, according to court records.

Prosecutors said Richardson suffered four wounds to his upper back, left lower buttock and outer hip. The fourth bullet went through Richardson's neck and exited through his forehead, court documents said.

Police learned Sardin may have been involved in the shooting and witnesses later identified him as the shooter in a photo array and a police lineup, according to documents.

"My baby is gone because people just don't have no remorse and no feeling," Richardson's mother, Laveta Richardson, said the next day. "My home will never be the same again!"

Prosecutors asked for Sardin to be denied bail today, but bail was set at $1 million.
