I generally like them if it’s done right but not a whole album or 80% of an album. That’s where it gets boring to me. There’s a bunch of drumless joints where I can hear drums in my head that would fit nicely and add some energy to the song.
Also, I hope this makes sense but there's a way to keep drums out but still have it sound almost like percussion and keep a bounce to it. If the samples are chopped a certain way they can still seem kind of groove even without drums in a way where you still wanna bop your head.

I agree with this post. However, the main issue with drumless beats are, no matter how good a song may sound with them, the song will almost always be enhanced with well place percussion. This is hip hop. Percussion is the life base. shyt started with breakbeats for goodness sakes.

Drumless beats always got a novelty feel to them to me. Like stop playing around mothafukka, put the percussion in there at some point. Only song I can think of off the top of my head that I would prefer without the drums is All That I Got Is You by Ghostface. But in general, I’m not a fan. And only the real hop heads do this. The boom bap type rappers. But they making songs with no boom and no bap:why:

damn what ever happened to k-os :ohhh:

he's still semi-active, i saw him do a show in the summer and it was pretty decent.

i don't really know the details, but he had some tough years i think ducking the taxman and was living out in vancouver.

joyful rebellion got reissued last year on lp, and it sounds fukking great. he really was ahead of the game.
