Supposing all of this matches the narrative presented, dude's family/extended family failed him, or he just couldn't get locked in to some community of solid men quickly enough. Entire wars and myths are based on that. The Greeks and Romans glorified that stoic death shyt, the Japanese are big on seppoku and even some of our ancestors chose death rather than live in bondage.
Not to mention the trope of unrequited love that is also pushed onto the youth, making them seem that if they try hard enough they can get the woman of their dreams. Not realizing, if she doesn’t like you how you are, she will never like you like that. This is what happens when you define your self worth off of relationships. Love yourself first. And I speak as someone who has experienced a different but similar situation.
