You guys can't be serious. You're comparing two totally different situations and trying to connect them. The article you posted says nothing about Duke University speaking or releasing anyone's name. Some investigative journalists are the ones who broke the Lance Thomas story and it was because the jeweler took him to court, which is public record.

So again, you're comparing arrests and public court documents to a students rights as written in the FERPA handbook that a school HAS to abide by from a compliance issue.

If I go commit a crime could I tell the police/feds "I know I confessed but I go to school so please don't release my name thanks brehs".
Did the police not know his name when they interviewed him, are they incapable of releasing that name without releasing all his school records?

you do know the police and the university or two separate entities. School cannot release anything without consent but obviously police jurisdiction takes precedence and if hanging a noose is a crime then you might get his name. Outside that the school is not allowed to release the name.

I was emailing local news stations and barry regarding this incident to try to push coverage on it. Either way, the girls name was not only known (obviously because of her IG/twitter handle, but her family was figured out and also that she went to Barry). So, the school was forced to investigate but obvously did nothing and her family business (her dad is a famous Dr. in Miami) was also put out there. Is that fair? Maybe - but this double standard you guys are talking about , while it does exists , isn't 100% exclusive to blacks.
