remember the free agency craziness of summer 2000? at some point, Duncan, t-mac, and grant hill were all supposed to join the magic to form one of the most talented trios in their primes. Unfortunately, it didn't end up as interesting as most people had hoped:

Duncan decided to stay with the spurs in the last minute. Only T-mac and hill did join the magic, but Hill was never healthy enough to see how the paining would look like. So, T-mac ended up carrying the whole team by himself.

how good the magic with the big 3 be?

Actually it was and that's why they had so much attention heading into that summer.

They did a massive salary dump the year before trading everyone (Horace, Nick, Penny). The Heart and Hustle tram that was suppose to be lotto bound was 41-41 and Doc Rivers overachieved and got some use out of basically role players (Bo Outlaw, Darrell Armstrong, John Amerchi, Ben Wallace, Chucky Aitkins, Tariq Abdul Wahid, Monty Williams, Ron Mercer etc etc) and they had all that cap space plus 2 draft picks. People had the Magic vs the Lakers in the 2001 finals that summer before they even made the signings. Remember John Gabriel won Exec of the year off that shyt.

You remember that big ass banner they rolled out for Duncan at the RVD Sportsplex with him, Hill and Mac in Magic uniforms talking about imagine....?

That said, Miami made some lowkey better moves (Eddie Jones, Brian Grant) and so did Joe D in releasing Hill in a sign and trade (Got Ben Wallace and Chucky Aitkins)

Orlando should have been alerted by Hill's ankle and Duncan's loyalty to Robinson but in terms of $ they definetly had that to get all 3.

Mac was all set to go back home cause he kept talking about not being enjoying living in TO. I remember there was speculation he may go to Miami because there was talk in the press about how Zo made a convincing case for him. Aside from that I think he visited Chicago as well, but the general thought was he was always bound for Orlando.

Those 3 guys could've all been in SA right now. I get why G-Hill went to the LAC, but I always thought he'd have been an ideal Spur, especially once he reinvented himself. I think Pop would've loved coaching him, and TD/TP would've loved playing alongside him. NTM he'd finally have a legit shot at a ring. :youngsabo::yeshrug:

SINY!!
Orlando seems like one of the least desirable cities to play in. I have friends who relocated from NY living there who have second thoughts about making that move....

no it wasnt

the goal was to sign Duncan and Hill. TMac was the one they wanted after those two.

If Duncan signs, TMac would have gone to Chicago.

They were going at all 3 and seeing who they could sign out of the 3 though pretty aggressivley. I know that T-Mac had visits to Chicago but it seemed like he was gonna sign with Orlando and they had him in aim to be like the 3rd wheel/Pippen glue guy

Only dude who said he wanted to go to Orlando that the Magic didnt want was Maurice Taylor. Which was hilarious cause he was talking in interviews about what they could do as a team and no offer was sent or invite :pachaha:
