The rebels have allies with jihadist groups like Ahrar al Sham which praised the Taliban, and said democracy is for infidels,Jaish Fateh al Sham which is formerly al Nusra aka Syrian Al Qaeda is an ally of the rebels, Ajnad al Sham, Turkistan Islamic Party which is a foreign fighters group. They used suicide car bombs in the recent West Aleppo offensive last week. So in all the rebels will replace Assad's secular tyranny with religious tyranny. They have said they will genocide the Alawites,Kurds,Druze and Christians.

If the rebels were a benevolent force then how come the Kurds,Alalwites,Druze and Christians haven't joined them? Syria is not a simple black and white issue where Assad bad and rebels good. It is a complex sectarian war we have no buisness to get involved in.

No, its a a very Black and Grey issue. Assad is bad. The rebels and other sectarian forces are varying shades of grey, as are the international actors (I daresay Russia is entirely in the wrong, as well). And there are Kurdish, Christian and Druze rebel/battalion groups in Syria.

CIA was spending $1B per year on rebels. Qatar, Saudi and Turkey was giving them support. Turkey let its border be open season and let ISIS and other groups roam in and out to destabilize the Syrian regime.

Syrian army got over stretched, they've made gains with Russian air and intelligence in the last year. Turkey finally closed much of its border due to their fear of the Kurds.

Once East Aleppo is taken back by the Syrian army, you'll see them and the Russians move East to fight ISIS and keep the rebels confined to Idlib province and the north of Aleppo.

Back to the topic of China...

They're obviously on the side of Assad and they're itching to have the PLA do training with the Syrian Army in this conflict.

The Druze and Assad: Strategic Bedfellows
This article explains how and why the Druze who hate Assad support him. In short the anti regime Druze were killed by Al Nusra. Plus Druze towns in Idlib were forced to convert to Islam. There no longer exist Druze rebels. The Druze region in the south has protected Damascus from the Southern Front rebels to make headway to help the besieged rebels in the suburbs of Damascus.

The Kurds have their own agenda. They want to carve out an autonomous region similar to the one in Iraq. They have been fighting the rebels since 2013 all over Northern Syria before ISIS entered the war in Syria. The Kurds distrust the rebels more so the regime. They have had more clashes with the rebels than they do with the regime.

There is no Christian rebel battalion that I know of. I have been following this war since 2012. If anything Christians support Assad for the simple fact they fear the Sunni opposition. That is a fact. Many Syrian christians have been enlisted to the NDF and SAA. The rebels made no inroads to Christians. The most pro regime areas in Syria are Christian areas.

Assad has large support from these minority groups and the sunni upper class. If you remove Assad how do you guarantee their safety when the strongest rebel forces are the salafist Islamist groups who wish to kill them?
