Rudy's defense has been shytted on for a minute now, where it's hard to tell if he's actually become underrated, as a result.
Dwight's reasoning for Gobert not being an elite defender is hilarious though. He essentially shytted on himself, and every single big man that can only protect the paint/rim. To that point though, I think Gobert has been unfairly criticized for his lack of ability to defend in space (in relation to his DPOYs), because plenty of former winners of the award couldn't defend in space either, or conversely, guards/wings who've won the award couldn't protect the paint at an elite level.
I guess this is more reflective of how far defensively the game has come where even great defenders can have the perception of their defensive value under question if their flaws are exposed. Nobody questions Mark Eaton's DPOYs because he wasn't being dragged out to defend high-level guard play to have his flaws put on the proverbial screen.
Take this for example -
I know cats would be quick to use this against Gobert to say he's overrated, but Luka would cook every single cotdamn big man that's ever won DPOY in this situation: Eaton, Dream, Mutumbo, Ben, Camby, Dwight, Chandler, Gasol etc. It doesn't matter, he would make stars out of all of them in sequels of Bambi On Ice.
